Meetup: How to VJ with Quartz Composer

Update: Here’s an HD recording of the meetup. Follow along by downloading Sergio’s files (.zip).

Ever wonder how VJs (video jockeys) put together movie clips, images, and special effects that react to the music and enhance your experience of the concert, music festival or club? Want to learn the basics? Join us for our next Processing Orlando meetup, where Sergio Mora will be demonstrating how to put together a basic VJ rig using Quartz Composer. In other words: come learn how to be a VJ 🙂

Quartz Composer is a node-based visual programming tool freely available from Apple for computers running OS X. If you want to follow along with Sergio, bring a Mac laptop with Quartz Composer installed (watch this video for instructions on how to download and install it, and contact us if you have any trouble).

Are you a Windows or Linux user? Check out vvvv or Pure Data (Pd), which are similar to Quartz Composer. The concepts should be similar enough to translate to your environment.

sergio-headshotSergio Mora is a network analyst and self-taught digital artist. He has been making video art since 2003, and has worked with DJs and musicians, providing live visuals for performances. His video installation We Live in You has appeared as a part of the RS21 collective’s exhibitions at the Maitland Art Center and at the Orlando Museum of Art’s First Thursday event, and won Best in Show at Platform Florida’s March 2009 Eco-Vision event. He currently VJs for The Video Department, a semi-regular event at Stardust Coffee and Film.
